ANALYSIS AND OPINION

The Amazing Spiderman arrives in theaters and cinemas virtually everywhere during the first week of July 2012, the sole exception being Japan where the film bows on June 30. The North American release (US-Canada) is July 3, one to three days before rest of world.

This unexpectedly early reboot boasts young actors (Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone) among our favorites, but we can’t help feeling that the entire affair seems unnecessary, a pointless redo born of marketing and financial incentive without any true creative reason propelling it forward. [See Summer Movies for more on this.] It’s hard to say for certain without seeing the completed film, but the initial trailer left us feeling empty, asking “Why?”.

Rhys Ifans does seem promising as Spiderman’s nemesis (Dr. Curt Connors, aka The Lizard), certainly more interesting than Willem Dafoe, who seemed uncomfortable and out of place as Green Goblin in the earlier Spider-Man (2002), which arrived half a generation earlier, boasting Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst.

The final Tobey Maguire Spidey flick was Spiderman 3 (2007) which means this reboot arrives just five years later. That doesn’t even qualify as half a generation. More like a quarter of a generation. Andrew Garfield is just eight years younger than Maguire, and Emma Stone a scant six years younger than Dunst. They would be contemporaries elsewhere, but in Hollywood these duos qualify as young and old, new and classic, in the never-ending quest to squeeze a few bucks out of film rights and film libraries.

We’re hoping The Amazing Spiderman proves us wrong, thrilling and delighting with fresh vigor that makes us forget the surprisingly enjoyable earlier flicks with the unconventional but effective Maguire spinning his way through the city.
