Meet The 43 Senate And House Members Who Will Decide The Fate Of Movie Box Office Futures

June 9, 2010 · 3 comments

wall street signJune 9, 2010

The fate of movie box office futures now rests in the hands of the Senate-House Conference Committee, whose members have finally been set. Listed below, with contact information, are the 12 Senators and 31 Congressman who will decide if the ban on movie futures in the Senate version of the Wall Street Reform bill will be in the final legislation that goes to Congress for a vote.

If the Conference Committee leaves the ban out of the final bill, the decision on box office revenue contracts will be left to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. For more on the ban, see What Do Onions and Box Office Revenue Have In Common? Also visit Jabcat’s Box Office Futures Page for the latest movie futures news, links and information.

If you are interested in contacting Committee members in support of, or opposition to movie box office futures, you should do so quickly as the Conference Committee hopes to produce a final bill in two to three weeks (by June 24). Due to the short time frame, phone/fax may be the best method of getting your voice heard. Many Congressmen only desire online contact from those living in their District.

House Democrat Barney Frank of Massachusetts is chairman of the Conference Committee.

Jabcat – Are you going to contact anyone?

I have previously sent a letter to the CFTC/Agri Committee and would recommend others to do the same, to support the idea that the ban is unnecessary when there is already a regulator perfectly equipped to assess whether box office futures contracts are harmful.

I also sent a letter to the CFTC in support of box office futures and hope that others will also make their support known. this whole situation has become a bit ridiculous at this point. This decision should not involve congress at all and should be left int he hands of the CFTC. If box office futures trading is stopped by the CFTC it will be a bitter pill to swallow, but I’ll accept their decision. If it is banned because of the involvement of congress, I’m going to be exrtremely ticked off. The legislative they are trying to pass is to make derivative trading more transparent and regulated and seeing as both Trend and Cantor set up their exchanges to follow these guidelines, I don’t quite get why box office futures are being singeled out here. I mean, I get that the MPAA has deep political connections, but nonetheless, including language specifically banning box office futures in the legislative makes the politicians look like puppets. This whole thing is extremely frustrating.

Just read the article about the 40 congressmen pushing for the ban to remain….I think its fair to say it’s over for these exchanges. You can not fight that level of opposition.

It’s very irritating, I have not seen the full text of the letter but the article suggests the authors have stated they are not aware of anyone who will use the exchanges for hedging – such a statement is proof positive that these people are expressing an opinion on something they know nothing about, have not bothered to look into, have not bothered to watch and digest the several hearings on the subject or acknowledge the many people that have come out in support. Cantor /TrendExch have no hope if they are facing that level of ignorance.

The sad reality is that Cantor/TrendExch simply have not been able to get enough of the right supporters behind them.

I also sense that these people think a ban is necessary because they have got wind of the fact the CFTC are going to approve the application because the rules do not allow them to reject them when they technically hit the right notes.
