The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has approved MDEX as a Designated Contract Market for trading of movie box office futures and other entertainment futures products. MDEX (from Media Derivatives) will be known as the Trend Exchange or TrendEx. Press release and related stories linked below.
This is simply the first step, but a key one, towards actual trading of movie box office futures. Trend Exchange (TrendEx) must now obtain approval of specific futures products related to movies it intends to offer on MDEX. It currently has two products awaiting approval. Links to the product filing at the CFTC also below.
The Cantor Exchange, a separate applicant for CFTC approval of box office futures products awaits its approval later this month.
