Mads Mikkelsen: Rising Star

April 3, 2010 · 0 comments

In Clash Of The Titans (2010) one of the soldiers who accompanies Perseus (Sam Worthington) on his quest to kill the Kraken has a voice and delivery so distinctive and memorable I knew I’d seen him somewhere before. He plays Draco, a sturdy warrior who never smiles, one who has seen many battles, the kind of man you want on your side when facing mythical creatures and Gods who sit atop Mount Olympus. His identity puzzled me because I only recognized his voice and manner of speech. His face was new, offering no clue. Then it dawned on me. I was in the presence of Bond villain Le Chiffre from Casino Royale (2006). Daniel Craig’s poker-playing, money laundering nemesis. The dark-haired, perpetually scowling financier who bears a facial scar through his left eye. He is almost unrecognizable in Clash Of The Titans. Were it not for that deep voice with a slight accent, his measured style of delivering lines, I would not have known.

The man behind both roles: Mads Mikkelsen, a Danish actor, and one of Denmark’s biggest movie stars, a man with many credits (but few in English language films). He reminds me of Viggo Mortensen but has his own distinct screen presence. He disappears inside each role yet retains a vestige of familiarity. His work in Casino Royale and Clash Of The Titans makes him a Rising Star. Where will he take us next?
