Shameless promotion? Ratings hijack? Giant head fake?
The producers of this year’s telecast of the Oscars have publicly urged viewers to tune in early. They’re not referring to the best supporting actor and actress categories, typically awarded in the first half hour. And Billy Crystal isn’t scheduled to make a surprise appearance, singing and dancing his way though a new opening act Oscar medley (as far as I know). Even so, one of this year’s producers actually promised “the most dynamic opening, from drama to spectacle to humor, that has ever been staged.” That’s right. He said: THE MOST DYNAMIC OPENING . . . THAT HAS EVER BEEN STAGED!
Setting the bar a bit high, are we? Hollywood is famous for hype, but this is taking things to a new level. In the world of advertising this is known as puffery, outrageous claims about a product that aren’t meant to be taken at face value, exaggerated claims based on vague or subjective opinion that reasonable people/viewers do not take as literal fact.
But I’m not letting you off the hook so easy. I expect fireworks. So wow me Oscar producers. Thrill me to the bone. Make my joy button tingle with unmatched pleasure that makes me forget there ever was an Oscars show before this year. How’s that for setting the bar high?
